Winterthur Corporation is the US subsidiary of the Winterthur Technology Group. The individual group companies show an industrial history rich in tradition and experience. WST Winterthur Schleiftechnik was founded in 1906 in Switzerland to supply the expanding metal working and machine tool industry. In 1992 after an long collaboration in resin bonded grinding wheels with the Austrian grinding wheel manufacturer Rappold Schleifmittel Industrie GmbH the two companies joined forces. Rappold was founded in 1876 and has established itself as one of the leading manufacturers of larger diameter cut-off wheels in the industry. In 1999 the largest Swedish manufacturer, SlipNaxos AB, joined the group. SlipNaxos founded in 1920 and has established itself as a leader in the manufacturing of hot-pressed grinding wheels.
The customer base includes many of the largest manufacturing names in industry as well as many of the leading grinding machine builders in the world, with whom our engineers have worked in close collaboration. Over the years this collaboration has led to the development of an extraordinary engineering expertise and superior products developed to meet the stringent demands of production grinding: creep feed, profile, OD, gear, thread, centerless, cam and crank grinding as well as cut-off, and conditioning wheels.
For some time now, Winterthur wheels have been shipped to the United States as original equipment on many of these machines. We are committed to improving continuing service to these applications now through a U.S. organization. Winterthur Corporation was established in 1985 to better service those customers in the United States having special requirements for grinding wheels used in critical precision grinding applications. In 1989 the company was moved to Worcester, Massachusetts, expanded its sales support organization and implemented an extensive inventory and stocking program to improve upon the already competitive delivery schedules. In this short period of time we have become the standard against which most other abrasive companies and products are measured for quality and performance. From experience we know that the productivity of such operations as conventional and creepfeed form grinding, thread, gear and precision OD grinding can be substantially improved by grinding wheels incorporating unique formulations for induced porosity, structure formulation, and uniformity. Through the Group’s SPC and Total Quality Control programs, we are able to maintain grading, uniformity, and balance standards much tighter than the industrial norm. As a result, we can guarantee our customers that the grinding performance of our grinding wheels is exactly the same from wheel to wheel and order to order.
It's not our objective to become the largest supplier of these wheels in the U.S. Rather, we aim to be seen, clearly, as the best - with the finest and most reliable products supported by a field engineering group having recognized superior talents and experience.
